Challenge.

Develop an augmented reality (AR) iOS application in collaboration with Mississippi State University's Special Education Teaching Program, focusing on providing support for children with special needs

Action.

With guidance from the students at Mississippi State University's Special Education Teaching Program, we decided on reading comprehension as a skill that we could improve. Recognizing the challenges faced by 1st and 2nd graders with learning disabilities, particularly in decoding, understanding figurative speech, and grasping context clues, we believed through our combined efforts that significant improvements could be made.I tackled various tasks, such as creating the page text overlay, integrating Siri's text-to-speech functionality, defining challenging words, and developing an interactive image matching feature. Additionally, I crafted 3D models of story elements for augmented reality interaction. These efforts aimed to simplify the learning process for kids, making it more accessible and engaging.

Result.

BookShelf Adventures, our augmented reality app, merges reading comprehension with interactive adventures and activities, aiming to make learning enjoyable and accessible for children with special needs. With features like vocabulary support and audio playback, the app enhances visualization and engagement. It represents a significant step towards inclusive education, fostering a joyful learning experience for children with special needs.
